Birthday Gone Bad

I was on a TV show yesterday, talking about bad parenting and confession. The host read a confession from a parent about having lied to her two-year old about when exactly her birthday was. Because the parent hadn't planned anything, and needed to buy an extra week. The other guests on the show tittered. I thought: CLEVER.

My daughter turned four the other week. She asked for a birthday party. I gave her a birthday party. But let the record show: it was HARD. And if it had occurred to me to fudge the date to buy myself some extra planning time, I just might have done it.

So, the Fug girls were all  oh honey no about the wardrobe choices of Nicole Kidman and Kate Hudson at the American Music Awards, and, really, they have a point, although the mom in me is more, how did they get so skinny?, and thank god SOMEONE is flatter than I am than ugh, what an ugly dress and wow, Kate Hudson, COVER UP. I mean, really, I see Kate Hudson's boobs and I think thank GOD. My post-baby boobs are so flat that they are almost negative space and I was beginning to despair that if I was ever invited to a major awards show I would be undressable.

The good news: the world seems to be to be finally waking up to the fact that overparenting - the hovering, fussing, toddler SAT-tutoring, oh-god-will-giving-my-kid-formula-bork-his-Harvard-chances mode of hyperparenting that, seriously, just sounds exhausting - is maybe, you know, not so good if we want to raise relaxed and happy children. The bad news? There's a class for that!
